The sacred vocal music of Antonio Vivaldi
To the best of my knowledge, this is the first book (discounting a
handful of academic theses) to have been written specifically on the
subject of Vivaldi’s sacred vacal music.
To be sure, discussions of it in modern Vivaldian literature are very
numerous and sometimes quite extended. But these all too often have a
perfunctory, provisional feel, as if they have been included only far
the sake of completeness in surveys either of the composer’s music as a
whole or of his writing for the voice.
Some are in reality little better than a Konzertführer for a small
number of selected works. None provides enough contextual information
to enable us to situate Vivaldi’s sacred vocal music adequately in its
time and place.
