Sixth International Conference on the Future of Science
Viruses: the invisibile enemy is the title of the Sixth International Conference on the Future of Science organised by the Umberto Veronesi Foundation, the Silvio Tronchetti Provera Foundation, and the Giorgio Cini Foundation, that will explore, as usual, a theme of major public interest, and subject of intense scientiï¬ c enquiry. Internationally renowned scientists will gather at this conference to discuss how viruses have evolved and how humans have learned over time to defend against the invisible threat of viruses. They will also illustrate how a virus penetrates the body’s cells by bypassing its defence systems and the role of viruses in the onset of cancer. Other topics include the hopes for an AIDS vaccine and prevention of pandemics and new viruses, but also the so-called “good viruses”,
used in the development of gene therapy and cancer treatment.
The conference will post a clear direct message for society: viruses have a powerful economic, political and social impact, but science and technology are increasingly able to contain the threat and damage by developing new preventive vaccines and targeted therapies, based on the most advanced knowledge of molecular biology.
