Biblical exegesis for a history of scared music
On the Island of San Giorgio Maggiore, 25 May and 1 June, two meetings are dedicated to the theme of Biblical exegesis for a history of scared music: La Resurrezione by Carlo Sigismondo Capece and Georg Frideric Handel.
Organised by the Giorgio Cini Foundation Institute of Music, two lectures are given by Don Bruno Bertoli, an illustrious Biblicist, who provides a Biblical exegesis of the libretto by Carlo Sigismondo Capece, followed step by step, with examples from key moments in the great musical work by the young Handel.
The libretto by Carlo Sigismodo Capece, a poet and Arcadian at the Roman court of Queen Casimira of Poland, was set to music by Georg Frideric Handel, when the very young Saxon musical genius was touring Italy on a remarkable educational journey. Conducted by Arcangelo Corelli, the oratory La Resurrezione was performed on 8 April 1708 at the Palazzo Ruspoli, Rome. It is one of the finest masterpieces of the oratory concertato (featuring a powerful orchestra with a full sound) from the early 18th century. The brilliant orchestration and the highly effective melodic aspect embellish without overshadowing the exquisite Arcadian translation of the great dramatic, miraculous episode from the New Testament.
