Patrick Mimran. Out of focus

In the Out of Focus project, which led to both an exhibition and a publication, Patrick Mimran worked mainly on a lack of sharpness – not only of contours, but of the entire image. The primary objective of the project is to bring out the complete reality as a whole through a gaze that may seem abstract at first, but which becomes more and more realistic the longer one observes it, and which contrasts with the sharpness of the colour images that, with their smaller format, accompany and define the large photos. While the photographic tool is designed to represent reality as it is, Mimran seems to use it in reverse. For the artist, the best way to capture a subject, be it living or inanimate, is not to represent it as faithfully as possible, but to move away from it to the point of abstraction.
