The main section of the magazine presents the results of researches conducted on the archives of the Institute of Music, offering a broad spectrum of perspectives on the history of Italian music of the twentieth century: from the economic aspects of compositional work that emerged in Ottorino Respighi’s correspondence with his editors, to the historical and cultural context of the presence of Alfredo Casella in Russia in the 1920s; from the reconstruction through the sketches of the compositional process of Professor Bad Trip by Fausto Romitelli to the influence of dialectical materialism in Giacomo Manzoni aesthetics.
These articles are accompanied by two in-depth sections.

The first – “Focus” – opens a window on the international panorama of musical archives with two studies dedicated to the sources of music for cinema: in examination the American manuscripts of Franz Waxman for Rear Window by Alfred Hitchcock and the archive of Trevor Jones at the University of Leeds in England.

The second – “A Performer’s Eye” – inaugurates a column intended to investigate archive sources with the interpreter’s gaze and is part of the “Research-led Performance” project, with which the Institute for Music intends create a space for dialogue between archival research and musical performance.

The two contributions hosted in this section are dedicated to the unpublished revisions of Nino Rota’s opera Napoli milionaria and to the guitar techniques developed by Fausto Romitelli in Solare.
Finally, the usual column “Publications and Activities” offers an account of publications, seminars, concerts and recordings relating to 2019 and focused on the sources preserved in the archives of the Institute for Music.
