In the year of celebrating the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Italy and Indonesia, the Intercultural Institute of Comparative Music Studies (IISMC) has invited to Venice a group of ten artists from Banyumas, a district located on the border between Central Java and West Java (Sunda) and renowned for its fervent artistic heritage, which revolves around bamboo music culture. Recognized music and dance experts with rich and diverse backgrounds from arts centers, academic institutions and professional troupes engaged in the preservation, transmission and dissemination of Banyumas performing arts are involved in the project.
IISMC has organized a masterclass on Javanese bambu musik for the occasion, in collaboration with the Benedetto Marcello Conservatory of Music (21.5. 2024 – addressed to students), and the first-ever performance of Calung – Lénggér Banyumasan in Italy, inaugurating a tour curated by Daniele Zappatore – supported by Italian institutions and universities together with the Indonesian Embassy in Rome and the Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology – that will see the Javanese artists engaged in a rich series of workshops and concerts in the cities of Venice, Rome and Naples.
The program of the performance places calung music and lénggér dance at the center, in their dynamic and transformative nature.
The performance will take place on May 22 at 6 p.m.
